Strelitzia Reginae, better known as Bird of Paradise, is one of the most recognisable plants used in modern interiors. Its upright leaves, tropical shape and sculptural character make it feel more like a design element than a simple office plant.
In the right place, it can completely change the atmosphere of a reception, lobby or spacious meeting area. It adds height, movement and a more premium look, especially when placed in a clean, modern planter.
Strelitzia Reginae can be a beautiful statement plant for offices, but it needs the right light and enough space to look its best.
Why Bird of Paradise works well in office design
Bird of Paradise has a strong visual presence. It does not look small, shy or decorative in a generic way. It creates a clear focal point, which is why it works especially well in larger interiors.
Greenday would usually consider Strelitzia Reginae for bright reception areas, office lounges, spacious lobbies, executive offices and open areas where the plant has room around it. It can look excellent near glass walls, in waiting zones or next to seating areas, as long as the conditions are suitable.
It also pairs well with premium office planters. A simple matte, ceramic, cement or architectural planter can make the plant look much more refined and better connected to the interior design.
Light requirements
Light is the most important factor for Strelitzia Reginae. This plant prefers bright light and usually performs best in spaces with plenty of natural daylight. It can tolerate some direct sun, but in Cyprus offices, strong sunlight through glass can sometimes be too intense, especially during summer.
A bright reception area or lobby is usually much better than a dark corridor or internal meeting room. If the space has very little natural light, Bird of Paradise may survive for some time, but it will usually become weaker, slower-growing and less attractive.
This is not a plant we would normally recommend for low-light offices or windowless rooms.
For those spaces, plants such as ZZ Plant, Sansevieria, Aspidistra or selected Aglaonema varieties are usually more reliable.
Watering and care
Strelitzia Reginae likes consistent care, but it does not like sitting in wet soil. In offices, the biggest risk is often irregular watering. One person waters the plant because the surface looks dry, another person waters it again a few days later, and the roots stay too wet.
The right watering rhythm depends on the light, planter size, temperature, soil and air-conditioning. In a bright space, the plant may use water faster. In a cooler or darker office area, it will need less.
Its large leaves also collect dust, so regular cleaning is important. Clean leaves look better and help the plant stay healthier. This is one reason why professional office plants care makes a real difference for large statement plants.
Common office problems
The most common problems with Bird of Paradise in offices are brown leaf edges, leaf splitting, slow growth and general decline caused by poor light or inconsistent watering. Some leaf splitting is natural for this type of plant, but excessive damage can make it look tired.
Air-conditioning can also be a problem if the plant is placed directly in the airflow. Very dry air may affect the leaves, while frequent movement or brushing against the plant can cause mechanical damage.
Bird of Paradise needs space. If it is placed in a narrow walkway, busy corridor or tight corner, the leaves can be damaged easily. It should have enough room to grow naturally and keep its elegant shape.

We recommend Strelitzia Reginae when the office has good natural light, enough space and a clear design purpose for the plant. It is a strong choice when a client wants one impressive plant rather than many smaller ones.

When we would choose something else
We would usually avoid Strelitzia Reginae in dark spaces, very narrow areas, places with strong AC blowing directly onto the plant, or offices where nobody is responsible for regular care.
It is also not the safest option for clients who want the easiest possible low-maintenance plant. It is not extremely difficult, but it does need better conditions than the most tolerant office plants.
Bird of Paradise is a great office plant when it is chosen for the right space, not simply because it looks impressive in photos.
